Pride Month 2022 - The Month For Acceptance

Written by Lauren 17/06/22
Welcome to June! The month for rainbows, parades and most importantly it's PRIDE MONTH!
So why is there a whole month dedicated to LGBTQIA+ Pride? Why is pride month so important? Well just like any community that has been subjected to prejudice, abuse, and looked down upon, the queer community tries to push back on old-fashioned beliefs and lies and show what the rainbow actually stands for. The colours have their own meaning and represent everyone who flies the rainbow flag and any other flag be it lesbian, bisexual or aromantic.
Where did pride month originate? In June 1969, the Stonewall riots happened. The following year, the first pride parades took place in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco on the 28th of June. After that, every year in June pride parades happened and it has subsequently turned into pride month. Even if you're not a part of the community, it is still crucial to support the LGBTQIA+ community as an ally.
Why do we need pride? Here are the hard facts:
71 Jurisdictions criminalise private, consensual, same-sex sexual activity. The majority of these jurisdictions explicitly criminalise sex between men via ‘sodomy’, ‘buggery’ and ‘unnatural offences’ laws. Almost half of them are Commonwealth jurisdictions.
43 Jurisdictions criminalise private, consensual sexual activity between women using laws against ‘lesbianism’, ‘sexual relations with a person of the same sex’ and ‘gross indecency’. Even in jurisdictions that do not explicitly criminalise women, lesbians and bisexual women have been subjected to arrest or threat of arrest.
11 Jurisdictions in which the death penalty is imposed or at least a possibility for private, consensual same-sex sexual activity. At least 6 of these implement the death penalty – Iran, Northern Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Somalia and Yemen – and the death penalty is a legal possibility in Afghanistan, Brunei, Mauritania, Pakistan, Qatar and UAE.
15 Jurisdictions criminalise the gender identity and/or expression of transgender people, using so-called ‘cross-dressing’, ‘impersonation’ and ‘disguise’ laws. In many more countries transgender people are targeted by a range of laws that criminalise same-sex activity and vagrancy, hooliganism and public order offences.
Even though here in the UK being a part of the LGBTQIA+ community is not an illegal act, the community is still victimised, harassed and violated. To be an ally is to speak out against homophobic and transphobic language, march alongside and support your friends and family who come out. Most Pride events are family-friendly, especially during the day so it's a great day out for all families and a colourful learning experience for the kids. The day is always about joy and learning that other people will be different and are allowed to be.
